Hi Ana. I enjoyed this column a lot and I think you make your case really eloquently (I haven't seen Wicked, but I did watch Emilia Perez on the big screen).
I have a couple of thoughts on the second film:
1. "Bad reviews pretty much across the board." Emilia Perez has an average score of 71% on metacritic.com, so critics were actually relatively positive about it. However, user reviews are much less favourable (the average is less than 60%).
2. The film is definitely flawed (and the fact that it was made by a French director in a French studio with non-Mexican actors is pretty outrageous). However, I really liked the fact that for once, I had no idea where the movie was going or how it would end (Most mainstream movies are utterly predictable and not remotely original). Also, some of the acting was brilliant.
Does it deserve an Oscar for best film? No. But I think it does deserve some credit for being a complete one-off in a world where most mainstream movies take no risks whatsoever (I guess because there's much more at stake).
I hear you, Andrew! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think you make a solid point with it deserving credit for taking a risk in the current landscape.
